You have met someone. Maybe at a friend’s party, maybe at the gym, maybe in a bookshop. The conversation is good. She is laughing. You can feel that if you do not do something in the next minute, this moment is going to end and she will walk out of your life forever.
And your brain goes completely blank.
I have been there. Before my career, and even during it, I have felt that exact panic. Fourteen years of working in front of cameras and alongside confident women has made me much calmer about these moments, but it has not made me immune. What it has given me is a simple, honest way to handle them.
So here is how to ask for a girl’s number without it being weird, for you or for her.
Why asking feels so hard
The fear is not really about the number. It is about rejection. When you ask, you are revealing that you like her. If she says no, it feels like a judgement on you as a man.
It is not. A no usually means she is in a relationship, she is not looking, she is not feeling it, or she is just not in the right mood today. None of that is a verdict on your worth. I wrote a whole column on this: how to handle rejection from women.
Once you accept that a no is just information, asking becomes much easier. You are not risking your self-respect. You are making an offer.
Timing: ask at a high point
The biggest mistake men make is waiting too long. The conversation is great, so they keep it going, hoping for the “perfect moment”. Then it slowly runs out of energy, there is an awkward pause, and now asking feels strange.
Ask while the conversation is still going well. A good moment is:
- Just after you have both laughed at something.
- When you discover something in common.
- When she mentions something you could do together.
- When either of you needs to leave soon.
Usually five to fifteen minutes of good conversation is enough. You do not need an hour. You are not trying to get to know her completely right now. You are just trying to get a chance to continue.
Give a reason to meet again
“Can I have your number?” on its own can feel a bit empty. Number for what? Endless texting?
Attach it to something concrete. It shows you have a plan and you are not a man who collects numbers.
- She mentioned a café she loves: “You have to show me that place. Let’s get a coffee there this week.”
- You both like a band: “They’re playing next month. We should go. Give me your number and I’ll send you the details.”
- No obvious hook: “I’ve really enjoyed talking to you. I’d like to take you for a drink sometime.”
The reason does not have to be clever. It just has to be real.
The exact lines (simple is better)
Do not overthink the words. Short and direct beats long and clever every time. Some lines that work:
- “I’d like to take you for a coffee. Can I get your number?”
- “I’ve loved talking to you, and I’d like to do it again. What’s your number?”
- “I have to go, but I’d really like to see you again. Can I take your number?”
Then hand her your phone with the new contact screen open. This small move matters. It is easier for her to type than to dictate, and it shows quiet confidence.
What to avoid:
- Long speeches. “So, I know we just met, and I’m not usually like this, and you don’t have to, but I was wondering if maybe…” Just ask.
- Hiding your intentions. “Can I get your number in case I need help with something?” She knows. Be honest.
- Pressure. “Come on, give me your number.” No.
Read the signals before you ask
You do not want to ask someone who has been trying to leave the conversation for the last five minutes. Look for signs that she is engaged:
- She is facing you, not angled toward the exit.
- She asks you questions too.
- She is smiling, laughing, holding eye contact.
- She is not checking her phone or looking for her friends.
If the signals are good, ask. If they are mixed, you can still ask, lightly. If she is clearly trying to leave, let her go with a smile. My column on signs a woman is interested in you goes deeper.
Eye contact is one of the clearest signals of all, and it is also how you ask well: look at her when you ask, calmly. I explained how in eye contact: the skill nobody teaches men.
Instagram or phone number?
These days, many people offer Instagram instead of a number. It is not necessarily a bad sign. Some women feel safer giving a social profile to someone they have just met, and that is fair.
But Instagram is easier to ignore. Messages get lost among everything else. If she offers Instagram, accept it happily and then move quickly to a plan: “Great, I’ll message you about that coffee.” Once you have agreed on a date, asking for her number becomes natural.
If you are meeting on dating apps rather than in person, the same principle applies: do not stay in the chat forever. Suggest a meeting soon. I wrote about this in the first message on Tinder that gets a reply.

What to do if she says no
This is the part that defines you. A man who takes a no gracefully leaves a much better impression than a man who gets a yes clumsily.
If she says no, or hesitates, or says “I have a boyfriend”:
- Smile.
- Say something like “No problem at all. It was really nice talking to you.”
- Leave the conversation within a minute. Do not linger awkwardly.
Do not argue. Do not ask why. Do not say “Just give me a chance.” Do not get cold or sarcastic. And definitely do not complain about her to your friends five metres away.
You would be surprised how often women remember the man who took a no well. In social circles, at work, at the gym, reputations travel. Being gracious is not just kind. It is smart.
What to do once you have it
Getting her number is the beginning, not the finish line.
- Text the same day. Something short that reminds her who you are: “Hi, it’s Marco from the bookshop. Great meeting you. How about that coffee on Thursday?”
- Move toward the plan. Do not start a pen-pal relationship. Suggest a specific day and time.
- Do not overanalyse the timing. You do not need to wait three days. That rule is outdated. I explained why in how fast should you text back.
What my work taught me about asking
People think my industry is full of men who never have to ask for anything. The truth is the opposite. Everything on a professional set is asked, clearly, beforehand. What are you comfortable with? Is this okay? Do you want to stop? Being direct and respectful is the norm, not the exception.
Outside work, I have noticed that the women I know respond far better to a man who simply says what he wants and accepts the answer, than to any clever game. Directness is a form of respect.
Plenty of women in adult work have also had to learn to be direct, about money, contracts and careers. Lisa Ann is a good example: after her performing career she built a second life as a sports radio host talking about fantasy football. If you want her story, read my column on Lisa Ann, from porn to fantasy football radio.
Practice makes it easy
The first few times you ask, your heart will pound. That is fine. Like anything, it gets easier with repetition.
- Start by having more friendly conversations with strangers, without any goal.
- When you meet someone you like, ask, even if it feels early. Every ask is a rep.
- Count your attempts, not your results. Ten asks is a success, whatever the answers.
Confidence is built by doing the scary thing over and over. My column on how to be confident with women explains how.
The bottom line
Asking for a girl’s number does not need a clever technique. Ask at a high point, while the conversation is still alive. Give a simple, real reason to meet again. Use short, direct words. Hand her your phone. And whatever she answers, smile and stay gracious.
The men who are good at this are not the ones who never get rejected. They are the ones who ask cleanly, accept the answer, and keep living their lives.

FAQ
How do you ask for a girl’s number without being awkward? Ask while the conversation is still going well, give a simple reason to meet again, use a short direct line such as “I’d like to take you for a coffee. Can I get your number?”, then hand her your phone and stay relaxed whatever she answers.
When is the right time to ask for her number? Ask at a high point, when you are both laughing or engaged and before the conversation fades. Five to fifteen minutes of good conversation is usually enough; waiting until it dies makes it harder.
Should I ask for her Instagram or her number? A phone number is more direct and more likely to lead to a real date. Instagram is fine if she offers it, but it is easier to ignore, so try to move to a plan and a number soon.
What do I do if she says no? Smile, say something like “No problem, it was really nice talking to you”, and leave the conversation gracefully. Do not argue, ask why or try to negotiate.
